
6.9 MWh Ultra-Large Capacity: SVOLT Unveils Short Blade Liquid-Cooled Energy Storage System and Upgraded Short Blade Energy Storage Cells
On April 11, the 12th Energy Storage International Conference & Expo (ESIE 2024) kicked off in Beijing. SVOLT showcased its comprehensive range of energy storage solutions, including dedicated short blade cells, home energy storage, commercial and industrial energy storage, and grid-scale energy storage systems. SVOLT introduced its newly developed 350Ah and 730Ah high-capacity short blade energy cells for energy storage applications, as well as the world’s first 6.9 MWh – 20’ liquid-cooled short blade energy storage system, which drew widespread attention.


Born with Large Capacity, Comprehensive Short Blade Energy Storage Cell Upgrade
In recent years, the energy storage industry has seen rapid growth, driven by the national dual-carbon strategy. Traditionally, most energy storage cells were based on the power cells used in commercial vehicles. However, as energy storage applications become more complex and diversified, the demand for specialized energy storage cells has become increasingly urgent. As energy storage stations expand from MWh to GWh scale—and are poised to grow even further—there are rising expectations for larger cell capacities. This trend also brings significant cost reduction and economic performance enhancement of energy storage projects, showcasing an obvious large capacity trend of energy storage cells.
That said, scaling up cell capacity is not a simple task, demanding significant innovation in product design, technology, manufacturing, and innovation.
After the launch and mass production of the industry-first large-capacity and long-life 325Ah energy storage short blade cells in 2023, SVOLT unveiled its upgraded Flying Stack + Short Blade energy cells at ESIE 2024: the L500-350Ah and L500-730Ah Flying Stack Short Blade energy cells.
The L500-350Ah cell, an upgrade of SVOLT’s popular 325Ah model, maintains the same size but offers 7% more energy density, with each cell now delivering 1,120Wh. It boasts a cycle life exceeding 11,000 cycles, with 13.3% reduction in BOM costs and 6.2% reduction in manufacturing costs compared to its predecessor. Thanks to the short blade design, the cell features high thermal dissipation efficiency, uniform temperature distribution, and minimal temperature rise.

The L500-730Ah takes the performance of the L500-350Ah even further, doubling the capacity while maintaining energy density of 420Wh/L and 1,000+ cycles. This cell significantly reduces PACK component usage, improving energy density of the energy storage system and enhancing BMS data acquisition and monitoring accuracy. It also enables more efficient grouping and cost reduction.

SVOLT remains commitment to leading with its bottom-up innovation based on its innovative Flying Stack techniques, L-shaped short blade structure, and pre-lithiation technology. The short blade + fly stacking cells designed for the L500 energy storage product, featuring a thinner cell, with a larger surface area that enhances thermal dissipation and minimizes temperature rise, substantially improving both safety and cycles. In rigorous needle puncture tests, the dedicated L500 energy storage cell was charged to 3.65V under the specified current, then punctured with a 5mm diameter high-temperature-resistant steel needle at a speed of 0.1mm/s, perpendicular to the battery. The needle remained in the cell for an hour, and the test showed no smoke, no fire, and no damage to the cell—demonstrating SVOLT’s commitment to defining extreme safety in energy storage from the very core.
Both the L500-350Ah and L500-730Ah cells adopt SVOLT’s industry-leading Flying Stack technique, inheriting the safety, manufacturing efficiency, and cost advantages of the Flying Stack + Short Blade perfection. With the launch of the two products, it demonstrates further advancements toward achieving maximum energy density and extreme cost efficiency in energy storage, which is pivotal for driving progress in the energy storage industry.
6.9 MWh! The 20’ Liquid-Cooled Short Blade Energy Storage System Launches
At present, energy storage projects are now entering the GWh era, with an increasing push for solutions that reduce footprint, save investment, and enhance system capacity and grouping efficiency. As a result, the market is trending toward 5MWh-20’ systems.
In terms of Grid side energy storage, SVOLT has introduced its 6.9 MWh Short Blade liquid-cooled energy storage system, powered by its in-house L500-325Ah/350Ah high-capacity short blade cells. This system delivers unmatched safety and cost efficiency and is the first in its class to use a CTR streamlined design that reduces components by 15%, saving 20% of the footprint compared to the mainstream 5MWh systems. The system adopts a single door solution, supports back-to-back configurations, greatly enhancing project utilization.

In terms of cells, the blade series features SVOLT’s in-house 325Ah and 350Ah short blade cells, featuring the third-generation high-speed stacking 3.0 Flying Stack technology to ensure superior safety and consistency.
In terms of PACK, SVOLT has introduced innovations in materials and design that reduce thermal dissipation, tightly control expansion, and enhance grouping efficiency and fire protection flexibility.
In terms of system integration, SVOLT has made further improvements in structure, electrical systems, communication, fire protection, thermal management, and compatibility, achieving enhanced functionality at a better cost.
In terms of safety, the system adopts the Flying Stacking cells with extreme safety, and CTR design to offer double-sided liquid cooling capability, bringing optimal temperature control to life, reducing the temperature difference in cells by 40% and increasing cell lifespan by 15%.

Since unveiling its comprehensive upgrade for its short blade products at the 2023 Battery Day, SVOLT has been committed to delivering cost-effective, safe, and efficient energy storage solutions. By the end of December last year, SVOLT’s 325Ah cells rolled off the production line at Chengdu base. In January, mass deliveries of the 325Ah Short Blade liquid-cooled energy storage containers began.
